O. 6492 : Title of the Course: Certificate Course in Theatre for Development

O. 6493 : Eligibility : A student for the admission of Certificate Course in Theatre for
Development must have at least completed his/her Higher Secondary Education (HSC
i.e. 10+2) of Maharashtra State Board or any other equivalent board.

R. 9236 : Duration of Programme : The d uration of this Certificate Course in Theatre for
Development shall be of 60 hours. The programme shall be conducted on part time basis. The
maximum durat ion for the completion is 3 months.

INR 10,0 00/‐ per student

30 Students

Pedagogy:
The Methodology shall include classroom teaching, assignments, practical work , Workshop,
project work, group activity, role play, etc.

Introduction :
Education requires communication in the form of starting a continuing dialogue between the
learners or trainees and their trainers, teach ers, animators or facilitators. Various terms are
used for Theatre for Development (TFD), for example: popular theatre, propaganda theatre,
case drama, developmental theatre forum, or sometimes, political theatre. Each of these terms
indicates to some extent what this theatre tries to ac hieve.
Theatre for Development is being developed as one way of helping the masses in the
developing world to come to terms with their environment and the onus of improving their lot
culturally, educationally, politically, economically and socially.

Obje ctives of the Course :
 Performances or workshops aim at an exchange of ideas between actors/facilitators
and the audience
 The content of the performances is directly related to the living environment of the
targeted audience
 The themes interwoven in the storylines of the performances are problem -oriented
and of direct relevance to the community
 The audience is motivated to interact in a direct manner during or after the
performance with the actors/facilitators

Learning Outcome:
 Students will learn to deliver audience -appropriate theatrical presentations for
development of the society
 Students will acquire the skill to use visual, auditory, and/or technological aids in
support of oral communication.
 Students will learn to compreh end and analyze current societal issues in dramatic
literature and practice.
 Students will gain proficiency in performance in various styles and venues.
 Students in Stage Management, Directing, and Design tracks will prepare a
professional resume and portf olio or appropriate support materials according to their
discipline.

Course Content:

Week 1 Importance of Theatre for Development, Concept of Development and
Sustainable development.
Week 2 History of theatre, Types of theatre,
Introduction to theory formalizing with Indian Theatre, Various folk forms
and ballads.
Introduction to applied theatre.
Week 3 and 4 Collection of data for theatre and Action research , Understanding the
philosophy of applied theatre : Dramatic moves, Notation and storytelling,
exercise of balance, space, Language, expression coordination , theatre
games and activities etc.
Week 5 Data analysis and
Problem identification for theatre ,
Week 6 and 7 Improvisations and Problem analysis: Conversation, Notation of Stories,
building up story with an idea or object
Week 8 and 9 Writing Script for theatre, Facilitation and performance based techniques.
Week 10 and 11 Performances in Community( Street Play)
Week 12 and 13 Relation between activities and behavioural aspect.
Post-performance discussions and feedback technique for development
communication

Week 14 and 15 Follow -up and Overview of the course
