COURSE TITLE: Advanced Chinese I: Reading + Writing

Course outline:
1. Comprehend and apply and make use of advanced language structures in authentic
situations. Understand and build complex sentences pertaining to concrete necessities.
2. Develop the ability to read and understand complex Chinese characters, idioms and
classic Chinese text.
3. Demonstrate the ability to read newspaper, magazines , classic poems etc.
4. Analyse complex language structures and respond to daily life situations.
5. Use language apps and (online) dictionaries.
6. Develop the ability to work in different teams and mixed groups.
7. Apply language learning skills of reading and writ ing skills at the advanced level in

The course shall introduce 1800 basic Chinese words. The focus shall be on practice of

Course Outline:

This course shall emphasize upon advanced written and oral communication skills in Chinese. The
focus will be on pronunciation, intonation and junctures. Students shall be trained in elocution skills,
rhetoric’s, use of body language and appropriate gestur es.
Different forms of oral communication like roleplay, monologues, dialogues and written
communication like e -mails, SMS, postcards and letters will be practiced. More emphasis on fluent
communication in any of the social, political and business -relat ed interaction.

Course Outline:
This course introduces translation (English>Chinese and Chinese>English) as an
employability skill. The course material shall be compiled by the respective teacher and may
consist of (online) newspaper and magazine articles, letters, speeches, brochures, ( simple)
literary texts, instruction manuals and introduce translation of texts of different domains like
technical, scientific, engineering, medical, legal, commercial. The course imparts knowledge
on China’s current affairs such as politics, foreign polic y and socio -economic issues through
translation. Moreover, the course also intends to approach the cultural gaps between China
and India which is a major challenge in translation.

teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

knowhow and skills, social forms, principles of psychology of learning, exercises,

visual and interactive exercises.

COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Chinese literary texts

Course Outcomes:

1. Understand and discuss selected literary works for different epochs.
2. Comprehend, analyse or interpret literary works with reference to several aspects like
the time, space and character constellation as well as the plot, narrative style, figures
of speech, idiomatic phrases, etc.
3. Illustrate the literary works and contextualize them with resp ect to the literary epoch
and the respective genre.

COURSE TITLE: Advanced Translation Skills

Course Outcomes:
1. Explain, illustrate and discuss selected theories of translation.
2. Improve Chinese & English language skills.
3. Apply the concepts and theories of translation to various translated texts. Identify, critically
analyse and translate or trans -create different types of texts.
4. Research concepts / terminology online and use online dictionaries.

Course Outline:
The students shall be introduced to various translation theories, and the methodology and
practice of transla tion. The students shall be introduced to different types of texts from
various domains and their translation. Wherever relevant the theories learnt in the course
shall be applied and discussed in the translated texts. The course shall discuss various aspe cts
of translation as a profession. Advanced level use of word processing, spreadsheet,
presentation and PDF creation software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power point, Adobe
