Preamble and Objectives

The course is focused on four fine arts –Dramatics (inclusive of acting), Dance,
Music, and Painting.Natural talent and systematic training are two equally
important elements of good and effective projection of any fine art. Ancient Indian
knowledge system is rich with information regarding the basic principles of fine
arts. Inclusion of such material in the training /grooming of artists would definitely
contribute an extremely beneficial and interesting dimension.
This course aims at –
a) Introducing various sources of information from ancient Indian Sanskrit texts, regarding basic theoretical principles of fine arts.
b) Making students aware of the direct applicability of these principles
c) Throwing light on the actual usage of ancient textual information in various artistic training endeavors in the present time.

Interdisciplinary Course on Ancient Indian Arts

Unit I : Drama and Acting (1 credit) 15 marks
a. Natyashastra- Theatre/ stage arrangement
b. References from Abhinayadarpana by Nandikeshwar and Vishnudharmottarapurana
c. Types of Drama ( Dasharupaka)
Unit II
: Dance (1 credit) 15 marks
a. Natyashastra- Bhava, Rasa, Tala, Body movements, Types of Abhinaya
b. Seven Indian dance styles
c. Application of ancient knowledge in the present era

Unit III: Music (1 credit) 15 marks
a. Ancient literary sources – Natyashastra, Vishnudharmottarapurana,
Sangeetaratnakara by Sharangdeva
b. Application of ancient knowledge in the training and performance of artists

Unit I V: Drawing and Painting (1 credit) 15 marks
a. Chitrasutram in Vishnudharmottarapurana – Chapters 35 to 43
b. Application of ancient knowledge in the training of artists

Project – Report writing with a view of critical appreciation of any Indian classical
dance performance / music concert /drama.
