SYLLABUS REVISED FOR THE
ONE YEAR DIPLOMA IN
PARIYATTI AND PATIPATTI
[Theoretical and Practical Perspective of the Theravada Teachings of the Buddha ]

PREAMBLE
Pariyatti, Patipatti and Pativedha na are the threefold way of understanding the teachings of the
Buddha - the Dhamma. Pariyatti is the theoretical aspects such as the reading, listening of the
dhamma; along with the discussions, analysis and critical thinking . Patipatti is the actual practice of
the dhamma in the daily life so as to expe rience the knowledge or reality, which has been read,
listened to or analysed, for the actual experience of the reality which is the Pativedhana. Thus to
actually understand the teachings of the Buddha, Pariyat ti and Patipatti that is - the Theoretical and
the Practical aspects of the teachings of the Buddha is very important.
Pali is one of the ancient languages of India. University of Mumbai has recently [June 2007] started
the Department of Pali, to promote a nd propagate the Pali language. With the revival of the
teachings of the Buddha in India, the need to understand the teachings of the Buddha in its original
form along with the Theoretical and Practical aspect is felt and thus the course is designed.
