COURSE TITLE: Advanced Chinese Literature I (Prose, Short Stories - Pre 1949)
Credits = 6

This course deal s with: Language structures, Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics using cases,
declension of articles and adjectives, prepositions, tenses, active and passive voice, prefix,
verb combination, relative sentences , comprehension and communication skills.
This cou rse will introduce the students the genre of Chinese short stories and short prose .
Classica l stories and Chinese prose will be discu ssed at length in terms of form, content and
historical context. The paper will consist of selections from representative short stories from
1919 -1949 with particular focus on Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Ba Jin, Lao She, Guo Moro, and Ding
Ling.
