Justification Gradus Peritus 1 in Italian Language and Culture
1. There is a great need for starting a course in Italian language and culture in Mumbai as
there is no such course being taught in Mumbai even by private players.
Italian is a rich language and Italy has an ancient vibrant culture. It belongs to the
Indo-European group of languages. Knowledge of this language and culture is
increasingly valued in a globalised world. The city of Mumbai which is hub of Indo
Italian collaborations has no affordable option for students to study Italian language
and culture.
Marathi, Hindi and many other Indian languages have language structures similar to
Italian. Learners will be taught to evolve their own learning strategies focussing on
similarities of structure while also underlining the individuality of the Italian language
and culture
2. UGC has always recommended starting foreign language and culture courses that
improve employability of students. In today’s world, a foreign language competency is
one of the markers of a good bio -data.
3. The Italian language courses are being conducted by an Assistant Professor in Italian
appointed from Italy by the Italian Ministry of External Affairs for a period of six
years. He joined his duty in March 2019 and since then has been engaging lectures for
students free of cost. Until this cour se is approved by the Academic Council and other
university bodies it cannot be introduced officially, fees collected and exams
conducted. As soon as this course is approved by the Academic council students will
register pay fees and appear for exams on 29 and 30 April 2020.
4. The Gradus Peritus 1 course in Italian language and culture started by the
University is self-financed . This course will be taught till 2025 by Dr Antonio Bove,
appointed as appointed from Italy by the Italian Ministry of External Affa irs. His
salary is paid by the Italian government and there is no financial burden on the
University of Mumbai. Presently there is no qualified faculty in the Mumbai to teach
this course.
5. The duration of the course is 90 hours as per the specifications C ommon European
Framework of Reference for Languages formulated by the European Union
https://www.coe.int/en/web/common -european -framework -reference -
languages/level -descriptions It can be taught over a semester or in a more intensive
manner depending on student demand.
6. The minimum intake would be 15 students and the maximum intake will be 60
students. No admissions have been given as this course is not been ratified by the
Academic Council. No of students attending free of cost since March 2019 is at least
10.
7. The student will have excellent opportunities in the job market because of the rich
presence of Italian companies in the Indian market either as independent employers or
as collaborators with the Indian industry. The Baramati belt in Maharashtra is full of
Italian companies looking for Italian speaking employees and the tertiary sector fed by
this Italian speaking industries (hospitality sector et c) also have a high demand for
such qualified students.
