New ordinances 6711 & 6712 relating to the
Certificate Course in Bansuri.
(i) Necessity of starting the course: The university of Mumbai is likely to sign MoU
with Vrindavan Gurukul, Mumbai. Vrundavan Gurukul is a premier institution
imparting Bansuri training, founded by Padma vibhushan Pt. Hariprasad Chourasia.
The said course would be run by the Vrundavan Gurukul as a part of MoU. There
are very few University’s in India that provide courses in Bansuri Training. Hence
this course would be beneficial to the students.
(ii) Whether UG C has recommended to start said courses : UGC encourages the
incorporation of skill oriented and value added, add on courses in colleges/Universities to
be opted by students as a parallel sub discipline while pursuing their degree level
education.
(iii) Whether is course is commenced from 2019 -20? : No, it is proposed to be
commenced form 2022 -23
(iv) Whether the course started are self -financed, whether the adequate no. of
eligible permanent faculties are available?: The course would be conducted by
Vrundavan Gurukul and would be self financed.
(v) Give the details regarding the duration of this course. Can it be compressed? :
The duration of the course is One Year (Two Terms). It cannot be further
compressed.
(vi) Intake capacity of the course and no. of admission given in the current academic
year (2019 -20) : The proposed course is to be instituted from the academic
year 2022 -23. The proposed intake capacity is 25. No students were admitted in
2019 -20 as course is yet to be instituted.
(vii) Opportunity of Employability available after undertaking this course: The
students can work as freelance musicians.

Certificate Course in Bansuri
The BOS in Hindustani Music takes great pleasure in instituting its first
ever courses in Bansuri (Flute) i.e. Pre -Diploma and Diploma Course in Bansuri.
The Department of Music currently conducts Pre-Diploma course in Hindus tani
Classical Vocal. Institution of these courses are BOS’s step towards creating
better Music Ecosystem in Mumbai and Maharashtra.
Objectives of Certificate Course in Bansuri
1. To learn and appreciate Indian Classical Music
2. To learn Basic techniques of playing Bansuri
3. To learn basic concepts of Indian Music like Swar, rhythm, Bandish,
Raga, Tala etc
4. To introduce students to the semi -classical music played on Bansuri
Learning Outcomes of Certificate Course in Bansuri
After the competition of the course, a student would be able to
1. To Recognize and play ShuddhaSaptak (Major Scale) on Bansuri
2. To recognize and play Major and Minor note
3. To understand concept of Raga and its elaboration

Eligibility : A candidate for being eligible for admission to the PRE -
DIPLOMA COURSE IN BANSURI must have passed the SSC (Std
X) examination conducted by the Maharashtra State Board of
Secondary Education or an Examination of another University or Body
recognized as equivalent there to. The candidates’ admission to the
course will be subject to his passing an audition test conducted by the
Head of the Institution where the candidate seeks admission.

Proposed Syllabus for CERTIFICATE COURSE in Bansuri
Practical Paper I – Viva voce ( 50 Marks)
(Exam to be conducted for 30 minutes per student )
1. In SwarAbhyaas – At least 20 Alankaars will be
taught in Major and Minor notes and then in
the 5 ragas in different talas. 10 marks
2. In Raga Abhyaas - 5 Ragas to be taught –
Bhupali, Durga, Yaman, KIrwani, Bihag. For
each raga we will cover Alaap, Sthayi, Antara,
Short and Long Taan 10 marks
3. Detailed study of one Raga - Practice of
instrumental music in Raga Yaman in Jhaptal
and Tee ntal in medium and drut tempo 10 marks
4. Study of Talas - different rhythmic cycles in
Teental, Ektal, Jhaptal, Keherva, Dadra and
Rupak. Student should be able to
demonstrate the Talas on their palm 10 marks
5. Light -semi classical music – Learning of an y
one Dhun on Bansuri in Bhajan and Thumri
style both. 10 marks
