Certificate Course in Japanese (Level JLPT N5)
The main aim of this course is to initially teach the students the two phonetic scripts of
Japanese, the Hiragana and the Katakana. Then to introduce the students to elementary
knowledge of the language, its grammar and phonetics, ensuring that they have d iverse
grammar exercises for practice.
Along with the practice of formal language structures, they would also be taught how these
structures need to be applied in actual situations. This course shall emphasize upon
communicative competence in Japanese wri ting, speaking and listening skills.
Once the students have developed a good level of comfort with the two phonetic scripts, they
would also be introduced to the pictorial script, the Kanji. They would be taught 120 kanji
with their multiple readings in t his course.
Equivalent to JLPT N5
Level N5: The student can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic
phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and
others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives,
people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other
person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Exam: Pattern of the exam paper:
The exam paper will test for comprehension, writing competency through essay questions,
translations, and knowledge of the scripts.

Written Exam: 100 marks
Oral Exam: 50 marks (30 continuous evaluation + 20 oral exam )


External Candidates with equivalent prerequisite competence shall be permitted to appear for
the Certificate in Japanese by paying a fees of Rs. 2000/ -

This course shall be offered as online/ offline / blended format from the academic year
2021 -22.
