Certificate Course in Conversational Urdu
Eligibility for Admission:
Minimum qualification of the candidate should be S.S.C. However if a non SSC
candidate is found to be eligible by way of appearing for a personal interview and oral
test conducted by the Department, he/she may be admitted to the Certificate Course in
Conversational Urdu.
Duration :
The duration of the proposed course is one year.
Fee Structure:
1) Tuition Fees ------- Rs. 2,500/-
2)Registration Fees ------ Rs. 100/-
3)Examination fee as per University norms
4)Honorarium for per lecture to resource person – Rs. 300/-
Intake Capacity and Duration:
The intake capacity of the students is 15
Lectures of 2 hrs duration will be held twice a week.
(4 lectures per week of one hour.)
1) The candidate will not be admitted to the examination if he/she has not
kept 75% attendance.

1. Outlines of Urdu phonetics and phonological features in comparison
with Hindi, Marathi, and Guajarati sounds and alphabets.
Such as : Aen, Ghaen, Qaaf, Zhey, Fey, Zuad, Toey etc.
a.Differentiating between Arabic & Persian borrowed sounds in
contrast with Indian sounds.
Such as : Jeem-Zey, Kaaf- Qaaf,
Gaaf – Ghaen, Kha – Khhae
b.Study of consonantal clusters, giving practice of the above peculiar
linguistic features of Urdu.
Such as :Khatm, Darakht, Shart, Sharm etc.
c.Articulation of typical Urdu sounds borrowed from Arabic and
Persian.
Such as: Qaaf – Glottal Consonant
Khhae – Uvular, Ph - Bilabial ,
Phh – Fricative, Daal - Dental
2. Practice of spoken urdu as ignorance of some sounds in daily spoken
language such as : Qaaf, Khhae, Ghaen etc. creates problems for the
learners as it should be explained at primary level only.
3. Some grammatical features of inflections of Urdu Verbs in the light of
Pronouns like Tu, Tum and Aap.
Such as:-Tu Aaa, Tum Aao, Aap Aaiye and
Difference between Hae and Haen.
4. Practicing honorific styles and polite exchange like Aiye, Baithiye,
Tashreef Rakhiye, Mulahiza Farmaiye etc.
5. Some Urdu Idioms, proverbs of daily Usages
Such as : Idioms: Aankh Lagna,
Proverbs : Kuen ki mitti Kuen ko lagti Hae.
Aansoo Nahin Ek, Kalejaa Tok Tok.
Aa Bael mujhey maar.
Daily Usages: Har Roz, Do-char din etc.
6. Situational Urdu Conversation:
Such as: a) High Urdu, Low Urdu, colloquial Urdu, Dilectal Urdu.
b) In classroom, friendly conversation
In market, restaurant.etc
c) Academic & Public Address.

Scheme of examination: (Viva V oce only)
In viva-voce examination, the student will be asked to explain and use the
following features in his/her conversation:
Part-A : a) Grammatical features of inflections (40 Marks)
of Urdu Verbs. (40 Marks)
b) Honorific styles and polite exchange.
c) Urdu Idioms, Proverbs and daily usages.
Part-B : Situational Urdu Conversation. (30 Marks)
Part-C : a) Reading a prose passage (30 Marks)
b) A small part of a Drama
c) Ghazal or Poetry.
The Marks of the viva-voce will be 100, on the basis of above mentioned
scheme.
