PREAMBLE
B.A./M.A. Five Year Integrated Course in Pa li
1. Introduction to the Co urse: The traditional way of learning Pali starts at an early age
and gradually develops into ethically strong basis of life. Now at the university though
we cannot give the monastic kind of training to the students, the need of th e time is -a
very strong foundation of sound mind and body, facing the stress and challenges of the
life. There is necessity of Pali learning for a long time from early age which few schools
in Maharashtra are giving, but not near Mumbai. Mumbai University has only one
college whi ch satisfies the need of Pali learning at the undergraduate and graduate level
those too only three papers in Pali.
The interest in the study of Pali language and literature is on the rise. There is an
increasing demand for th e courses in Pali from th e undergraduate level for intensive and
explicit Pali study at the University Department. Taking into consideration the need,
Department of Pali has proposed Five Year Integrated MA in Pali, where one can
dedicate his/her entire at tention to the learning o f the Pali language and literature, and
thus can venture into concentrated research in Pali which is the need of the day. Secondly
Pali being the international language, the increasing demand of the scholars of Pali in
and outside India into different area s of Buddhist studies like art and architecture,
archaeology, numismatics and epigraphy, travel and tourism is also one of the reasons
for such a course in Pali. The library, the guidance available at the university level is also
supportive to the course.
2. Aim and Objectives: this unique course B.A./M.A. Five Year Integrated Course in Pali
is designed with the specific aim and certain objectives.
Aim: To introduce comprehensive Pali studies at the University level.
Obje ctives : Pali Studies comp rising of Language of Literature of 2600 years , and having
an international status, is a kind of a neglected study in India. With the following
objectives the standard of the study is to be enhanced and take the students of the
Department of Pali at the in ternational level.
a. Incorporating the traditional monastic learning methodology in the modern setup.

Page 6

4
b. Focus on the overall development of mind and body of the student , beside language
learning with the help of workshops, study tours, seminars and traditional Pali
recitations and meditation.
c. Interaction of the students at the national and international level to be at par with the
Pali studies in the different south -east Asian countries.
3. Learning Outcomes : Broad expectations from the s tudent of the Department Of Pali ,
University Of Mumbai : what a student should know when he spends one year in the
Department of Pali, University of Mumbai in any course.
When the student enrolls in the Department Of Pali , most of them have micchaditthi
[wrong views] regarding many things about the buddha - the teacher, his teachings -the
dhamma , the people who follow the dhamma - the sangha and the language in which the
buddha taught the dhamma to the sangha - the pali.
This is because the language pali and it s literature, though has its origin in India , was lost
for almost 1000 years from the land of its birth and thus is forgotten today. Most of the
students are ignorant that the Buddha and his teachings in pali ruled India and spread to
the different parts o f the world and is the so urce of the study of ancient Indian culture
and society.
This is because the Buddha is always portrayed nowadays as a religious figure rather
than the greatest teacher of the mankind, the historical doctor who discovered the path to
come out of suffering, the psychologist who showed the role of mind in the daily life, the
utmost manager and disciplinarian, law giver and the foremost social reformer who
stressed on the ethical foundation and equality for all.
Thus, we Indians are mo stly ignorant about the Buddha, his teachings and the language
pali in which the teaching is given by the Buddha. though the language pali is known and
is an international language in the academic world, most of the indians still do not know
that –pali is the name of the language , as it is not a spoken today.
Thus, the student when he enrolls in the Department Of Pali , for a diploma or certificate
course with the qualification of 10th /12th pass or masters course after his graduation from
humanities or in a ny other field of medicin e or engineering or architecture, they are
equally ignorant about the language and the literature there in is in pali.

Page 7

5

4. Any other Points : as the B.A./M.A. Five Year Integrated Course in Pali is for five
years of Pali Studies together and therefore different from the regu lar university course of
M.A., thus the Fee Structure , the Course Credits and the Standard of Passing is as given.

PSO1

Understanding -understand the nature and basic of Pali language and
literature through grammar and origina l texts of Pali.
PSO2

Analyzing -analyze the relationship of the Pali language and the teachings of
the Buddha, in the historical, economic, social, cultural and personal level for
the better understanding.
PSO3

Performing - performance in the field of reading, writing, recita tion,
pronunciation and translation of Pali from the original text to the modern
languages of English, Marathi, Hindi etc.
PSO4

Applying -application in daily life is to be measured according to the changes
seen in the personalit y of the student. If no c hanges in the life of the student,
then the Pali learning is not relevant.
