New ordinances 6659 & 6660 relating to the
Advanced Diploma I in Chinese ( HSK 5 Level)

1. The New Education Policy (NEP 2020) emphasizes upon making students global citizens.
Teaching a technologically and culturally advanced foreign language like Chinese is a step in
this direction.
2. With the introduction of this course we are bringing our Advanced Diploma I in Chinese
Mandarin (HSK 5 Level) on par with the HSK 5 Level of the internationally recognized
language prof iciency level as per the Common European Reference Framework, which is the
standard global norm.
3. Bringing this parity with international language proficiency level shall make the
certification of University of Mumbai internationally recognized.
4. This will increase not only the employability of our students, but also facilitate their
admission to programmes of higher education worldwide.
5. This part time course will be a self -financed course and will not be a burden to the
University and qualified facu lty is available to teach.
6. Duration: 200 hrs

Programme: ADVANCED DIPLOMA I in CHINESE MANDARIN (HSK 5 Level )

Credits: 6 Duration: 200 hrs
Objectives:
1. Imparting communication skills in Chinese Mandarin for Level 5. Teaching of higher
intermediate Chinese Mandarin language to students who have passed Level 4. A
minimum of 2500 Chinese words will be taught along with detailed information on
Chinese culture. Chinese character will be increased largely. The learners sh all gain
ability to discuss on a wide range of topics and the ability to communicate fluently,
with native Chinese speakers .
2. Facilitation of learning of intermediate Chinese Mandarin language by imparting
reading, writing, understanding and speaking skill s by latest teaching methods.
Rationale of Advanced Diploma I Chinese Mandarin (Level 5):

The level of proficiency attained at the end of this course is that of near total fluency in
spoken Chinese and the understanding of it. The Advanced Diploma I in Communicative
Chinese Mandarin (Level 5), is the advanced level of learning the Chinese Language through
the integrated communicative approach. The required intense interaction with the
methodologies, tools and techniques of teaching, deployed as in the teaching of various
languages, including foreign languages make this the comfort level in the learning of the
Chinese language. Mandarin Chinese now develops into a comfortably spoken and
understood second, third or foreign language .

Programme Description:

The programme shall enable the learners to communicate in Chinese at a normal level in their
daily, academic and professional lives. The learners will be able to recognize more characters
and excel in writing. Building on the base of Level 4, the learner will learn clear expression,
emphasizing, exclamation, d egree, frequency, to remind, comfort, encourage and express
emotions etc with a certain level of fluency. They will develop communication skills of
speaking, reading, listening and understanding for daily routine use as well as a fluency in
social interact ion, even with native Chinese speakers. The learners shall possess the ability to
further their Chinese Mandarin language studies by going into advanced level courses.
